My 165 gas w/Multipower has clutch problem: clutch pedal does nothing. If tractor is in gear and moving, pushing clutch pedal down does not stop tractor, must turn it off to stop movement. Can put transmission in gear and hi/lo in neutral and tractor will start, if in 1st gear or reverse you can push hi/lo into low gear and tractor will move but only in 1st or reverse, activating multipower appears to work, will make tractor move faster. Cannot put PTO in gear, much grinding. Is clutch shot? Only 2900 hours, very good condition.

Thanks for all the good suggestions, but now I am puzzled. I have examined the entire underbelly of the transmission area and there is no inspection plate to open and look inside. The shop manuals I have from both Massey and IT do not show an inspection plate on this bell housing.

Any new suggestions? Am I missing something?

If you remove the inspection cover and find a lot of oil, try this trick. Get a can of Brake Cleaner and spray liberally on the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel. Occasionally, leaking oil will get on the flywheel/pressure plate face and will suction the clutch disc to these surfaces. The brake cleaner will break this suction and allow the clutch to work normally.

Hope it is this easy,

Aaron

Hi, this may have already been checked, but there is a pinch clamp on the throw out bearing shaft. You need a bar, (I use a long punch) put it through the hole in the end of the shaft, then losen the clamp, or tighten it back if it has worked lose when you get the proper free play on linkage. Check out a manual or maybe someone familiar with this can post the proper procedure. I have also had the clutch stick to the pressure plate from sitting or lack of use over a period of time. Once you get it lose you might want to prop the clutch pedal down for extended periods of storage, or lack of use. Worked for me, Good Luck.

Hello Wayne,
A few possibilities here.....all bad.
As mentioned by Don it is necessary to remove the inspection plate under the clutch housing to start. Have an assistant operate the clutch while you watch aided by a flashlight. towards the rear you should see the release bearing move forwards. If this does not then the problem may be between the pedal and bearing. Check the bearing it may have collapsed. If it moves correctly then it makes contact with the 3 release levers. Check that it does this and that the adjusting bolts are intact. Pushing the pedal down should cause the linkage to move and you will see the main pressure plate moving rearwards. I suspect that the linings on the main clutch plate have broken and moved. Instead of the plate consisting of 2 layers of lining material you now have 3 at one point meaning that 1 or two levers will be lower than the others. So in pressing the pedal you are effectively only pushing down on 2 'corners' of the assembly. This will cause the clutch to be constantly engaged. The second stage on the clutch pedal should be clearly felt as you press it and then you should be able to observe the movement as the PTO plate is released. This broken main plate will also cause the PTO plate to be permanently engaged.
Please come back and let us know what you find.
Cheers

Thanks to all for the suggestions and detailed instructions on how to investigate this problem. I will endeavor to examine this in the next few days and will post my findings. I am better at farming than tractor mechanics, so I hope I can provide an intelligent diagnosis.

That's what it sounds like. There is an inspection plate held on by 4 bolts underneath the bell housing, take that out and look up in there w/ a flashlight, get back to us on what it looks like. Someone should know a little bit more about the clutch on it.
