Have a MF 135 serial # SGM641011044 with an engine tag 7-145 7207 that the owner would like to replace with a diesel. Does anyone know what engine(s) will swap the best? The old 4 cyl gasser threw a rod and made a hole in the block right behind the starter. Where are the best places to get engine swaps, or does anyone out there have anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Be aware the stationary Perkins motors use a different Harmonic balance/crank shaft/timing gear covers so obtaining a stationary motor is not much help.

I did something similar a few years back. I replaced a 4 cyl Continental gas with a 3 cyl diesel. The experienced chap at the breakers yard helped a lot. Not too difficult but required a lot of driving for all sorts of bits that weren't quite right. The fuel tank, radiator, clutch, starter, fuel lnes, throttle assembly plus a number of bolts with specific thicknesses and lengths. As I say, seems doable and straightforward in the end, but had its fair share of frustration.

I think that there was a Perkins 3 cyl diesel that was an option on the MF135. That would be the easiest swap to a diesel. there are some things that you"ll have to do to the fuel system because the diesels require a return line to thefuel tank and that has certain implication regarding the fuel tank configuration. As Gerald advised, you"ll need a parts manual to know what"s required for the conversion.

Finding a Z145 block or having your damaged one repaired might be easier. Holes in the block are not always fatal if they"re in a low stress area. They can be filled with epoxy filler and painted over. New blocks with casting flaws are repaired this way. I"m not a fan of these kind of repairs but they can be a cost effective way to repair a damaged block if they meet the manufactures guidelines for this type of repair.

I think you meant there was a 3 cylinder Perkins GAS available. Yes there was but I'm not sure what years. Dave

Perkins 3 cylinder diesels were the only diesels used in US MF-135 production. Perkins 3 cylinder gas were the gas engines beginning in 1969, but very late MF-135 may have had Continental gas engines again. The last few years were produced only in Europe and may have been different from US versions.

This information comes from my owner's manual, and the wrong one that came with my 1968 tractor, the I&T manual, and the MF-135 parts book.

Look again. That's a Z-145 made by Continental.

Go find a parts book, that will show all the parts that are different, and to make the change you need nearly all of them.
