Rebuilding G176 from a MF 165. There was a lot of crud in the oil but oil filter was clean. Too clean. From what I can see the oil goes through filter from outside to inside, through a tiny hole (about 0.055") in the bolt, and then drips into the pan. The problem is, the tiny hole in the bolt is centered in the rubber grommet in the lower end of the filter. It seems like the oil doesn't HAVE to go through the filter and it appears that it hasn't been. Can I relocate the hole further up the bolt and make it bigger for more flow?

you should get a spin on filter conversion. real cheap and simple and will be well worth it. The last thing you should worry about is whether your oil filter is working. I've put these on my 165 and 135.

It is a cartridge type but does not have a spring (at this time). I can probably find a spring to put in it. I assume the spring should be at the outer side of the canister- correct?

I know on my mf 65 i was told if the canister oil filter did not have the spring it, it would not be filtering at all. This only applies if you have the cartridge oil filter.

You can get a spin on conversion that would eliminate that bolt, but I wouldn't reccomend drilling the hole out bigger.

A bigger hole means more flow, but it also means less flow and PSI to the rest of the engine.
