My Dad has a 70's MF255 in Georgia that needs a replacement injector pump. He was told that there is a special tool required to do the work. It sounds like a splined shaft that is inserted from the opposite side to keep a gear aligned. Can anyone help me on identifying what this tool is and where I might find one?

Hello,
Having the setting tool is not essential. The gear will not 'drop' when the pump shaft is removed. The timing case is too close to it. The gear is located on the pump shaft by a peg so there is no possible error there. What I would suggest is to clean the area where the pump gear engages with the large idler gear and apply a thin line of paint across the two gears. You can be certain then that you are replacing it as it came off. Generally the centre position in the pump slots is correct with the marks aligning. If you feel that it could be improved a little you can slacken the injector pipes and turn the pump in very small steps. Select the position which gives best starting, best even running and least smoking.
