Massey 1135 will not move

I recently purchased a MF 1135 with tranny problems. I was told the coupler between the tranny and the rear end was bad. Since I have had it home, I do not think this is the problem. If I shift the gears with the clutch pushed in, the gears go right in with no grinding. But, I can also shift it into gear with the clutch released. it will grind for a second, then fall right into gear. It sounds to me like a clutch problem, but I wanted a second opinion from someone more familiar with these machines.
Thanks

I have pulled the cover plate off the bottom of the clutch and run it with the transmission in gear and out of gear and the clutch shaft and plate look to be in good shape. It was suppose to have a new clutch and a major on the motor about 800 hours ago. The pto will ingage from the rear but not from the leverin the cab. the 3 pt works and I believe the hydraulic lever works also. I cannot tell if the hi/lo or the multipower is going in or out. My next step will probably be to pull the pump and plate under the seat to observe the shaft to the rear end. Thanks for the help.

There are three possible problems. (1) The linkage for the high/low shift lever is not adjusted properlyso the shift collar is not engaging with either of the gears.(2) The center broke out of the clutch.(3) The splines on the shaft going out of the trans & going into the rearend are worn off.The tractor may have a vibration at higher engine rpm's if the clutch is bad, but not always. Check the linkage. If ok, split tractor to check clutch. If ok the problem is the shafts. You then need to split between trans & rearend. Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Hello Put the pto in gear and see if it works. The coupler connects the transmission output shaft to the pinion shaft in the rear end. If the pto and the lift works than the clutch is probably ok. DH

It is possible to shift gears without clutching if there is no output on the transmission, like a coupler being out. It has been thirty years since I have been inside one of those critters and dont remember what the connection to the pinion shaft looks like. Get a parts book and look at it, that will give you an idea of where to start.

I had one that acted just like that. It was the coupler between the transmission and the differential. You may have to split the tractor in two places, and change the main shaft in the transmission. Not an easy fix but can be done.

Other than that it was a good tractor.
