I am almost complete with my 135 perkins rebuild. my next question is, how long should i wait to start bushogging and other things at high rpm.or what kind of break in should I do?

When I got the engine in my Cat done, they said to let it warm up and then work it hard. Don't lug it too much but don't baby it either. Don't let it idle. Idling is bad for a diesel. The reason for working it hard right away is so the rings seat properly. You should be able to use your bushhog right away. Dave

Hi,I have had 3 perkins 3 cylinder diesels engines rebuilt. The first was given light jobs and bit of road work,It turned out to be very lazy and a poor starter for the next 100 hours. The other two did hard work such as mowing and baling straight away, these start instantly and run good.My advise is to use them normaly as you would any tracor but dont labour the engine to much.

GAs or diesel?

Either way, warm it up once and then retourque the head bolts. If you don't you'll blow the head gasket.

For a deisel, most recommend working it hard but not lugging it down for a good break in. For a gas, work it but not as hard.

When I rebuilt Grandpa's Oliver 1600 Gas, I put it on the silo blower right away. Worked it pretty good too. I didn't retourque the head bolts and ended up having to replace the gasket after 10 hours.

I'd say once the hheadbolts are retourqued, go out and start using it. Don't lug it down really hard for the first 10 hours or so, but don't just putt it around either.

I just finished my rebuild about 15 engine hours ago, so far everything is good, with the exception of the rear main seal, it leaks!

The advice i was given by some of the engineers off the ship i work on, and some of the guys here was let her warm up slow and easy the first time, once up to operating temp retorque the head and check valve lash. I don't think i exceeded 1000rpm for the first hour. I then just took her out on the road for a while, maybe another 3 hours or so. I bet that i had 5 hours before i put any significant load on. Varying the rpm, but i never brought it up real high till everything was warm.

Last week i bushhogged 20 acres or so, no problems to speak of, no smoke at all, and not seemingly burning any oil either, course some is coming out the blasted seal.

Hope that helps, i am sure that it would better if mine had 10o hours on it!!! Good luck.

Did you put sleaves in as well?

yes , I had new sleeves put in. it's rather amazing, the tractor has over 5k hrs on it and the crank only needed polishing. Before I install the flywheel, I've already installed the rear rope seal and coated the back of the clamps with high temp rtv gasket maker, is there antthing yall would recommend me doint to the rear seal. I would die if I did all this and it leaked. Oh yeah. it's a perkins 3 cyl. deisel.
