Ok, I guess I sound dumb, but when I went to buy a air filter for my 165 they asked me if I needed an inner and an outer. Do I need both or could my tractor just take one? I pulled my old one out and it just looks like one filter.

Also, does anything hold the filter in place? I just opened up the 165 emblem and grabbed the filter and pulled it out. Is there supposed to be any holding brackets?

I"d imagine the 165 air filter is about the same story as the 150. The inner filter started appearing just about the same time as alternators replaced generators. My "71 150 diesel has the 2 stage filter.

Thanks for the help guys. Obviously my tractor is missing the hold down bracket and wing nut. Guess I'll be looking for those.

I know our 165 doesn't have the inner element.

The filter is held in by a bar that slides in. you should see 2 rectangular holes 180 from each other near the edge of the housing. That's where the bar goes. It has a screw in it with a cup that pushes the filter tight in the housing.

I have had 2 165s and have never seen an inner filter in one. There should be a bar that fits in both sides of the filter canister with a bolt that tightens down against the filter.

The inner element is often called a safety element. It isn't used by itself and is an optional smaller filter that goes inside the main filter. It is held on with a special wing nut. The outer element should be held on with the same kind of wing nut with a large rubber washer on it. Inner elements aren't replaced very often as they are just there in case any dirt gets through the main element(very rarely) or dirt falls off of the main element when taking it out for cleaning or replacing.
