Massey 22 questions

I have a Massey Harris 22 Standard.
I have a couple of questions.
1. The belt pulley is not installed. It has a plate over where it goes. Does it still need to have gear oil in the belt pulley transmission box?

2. I bought a oil filter from a Massey Harris dealer. It came with a rubber grommet on each end of the filter. I had to take one of the grommets out on the lower end to get the filter down far enough. It still has a leather washer on below the filter. Is it correct?

I still run some gear oil, about 1/2 to 2/3's of recommneded amount if belt pulley is present although the belt pulley drive shaft is not there. Oil is cheap compared to something going wrong.

As far as teh oil filter, I just use the rubber ring on top of the filter.

Thanks so much. That helps me. Is your 22 a standard or a row crop?
