I have a Massey Ferguson 500 crawler. The drive lines to both tracks turn when transmission is engaged but only the left one actually pulls. With engine off I can turn both drive lines by hand and I wondered how that is possible. I would have thought the driveline to the final drive would have been directly geared to the final drive. Is there some sort of clutch in the final drive.

you have brake packs that are about the same as clutch packs that's what makes it steer and the hole rear end has hyd. pressure so when machine is off no pressure and that's why you can turn the rear end and it's like a locked rear so both tracks pull together

Thanks for replying and for the information about how those drivelines work. As I stated in my post the left track is pulling but the right one is not ,even though the driveline turns when you engage it. When you step on the right brake pedal it will stop the driveline on the right side from turning. Is it possible that a valve could be stuck not allowing the final drive to pull on the right side and where would the valve be located.

You should ask on the crawler forum on here. An MF500 has a special transmission setup that allows for counter rotation of the tracks. Dave
