Log Splitter on a 150 ???????

I am interested in buying a log splitter that attaches to the tractor three point. The unit does not have its own power supply, it uses the tractor hydraulics.

If I understand the pump and controls on my MF 150 correctly, I must keep the lift arms from moving from a horizontal position with stay links so that hydraulic pressure is available at the top cover in constant pumping. That is to keep the splitter in position to operate the unit.

Problem: With the splitter fixed in position, I cant adjust the three point over rough terrain or up hills. The unit has four legs that sit on the ground. I guess I could remove the legs to keep them from dragging.

I understand that the splitter may be a little slow with only four gallons per minute pump flow and I need to also install a return oil line to the case. I am retired and not in much of a hurry anyway. BTW, the cylinder is 4-inch dia.

Will this splitter work on my 150 or is it really not worth the effort?

Thanks and this board has been a great help during the rebuild of the 150.

I've looked at log splitters. Both PTO and stand alone. The price to power of the stand alone is much more economical for the stand alone.

A PTO splitter at TSC runs $670.00 with out hoses or controls. and for a 30 HP class tractor like the MF150 produces 15 tons of pressure.

A stand alone 22 ton splitter only runs $1000.00.

I would think the hoses and control valves etc. would eat up most of that $320.00 difference. Also, with the stand alone you can transport it with your truck/car and do not need to haul the tractor to a remote site if needed there.

Tom:

Although you can fashion your three point splitter to operate from the tractors hydraulic pump it will take some adapting and, more importantly, you will not be satisfied with the cycle time as the tractor pump cannot supply enough volume.

A much better solution is to fabricate a PTO driven pump of 18-20 GPM capacity along with a separate reservoir and valve.

Dean, Thanks for the reply. You are correct about the cylinder cycle time. Might as well build a real splitter and tow behind.

I just wanted to know about aux hydraulic on this tractor for future reference.

While I"m restoring my 150, I took off all the plumbing for the remote hydraulics. But before I did, I"ve ran a splitter off of it many times. I use a diverter valve. That allows me to use the 3-point hitch OR the splitter. (But not both at the same time) It"s a simple matter of switching back and forth with a flip of a small lever. I would set the splitter in the position to use, turn the isolator to remote, then put the position control lever all the way to the top (constant pumping) and go to work.

MF Poor, where does the diverter valve mount and how does it work?
