We bought what we thought was a 1940 Massey Harris Orchard Tractor, Continental 4 cylinder...We now wish to sell it, but are now being told it isn't an Orchard Tractor. I can't find out how to determine What it is. I have pictures, can anyone determine what it is if you see the pictures and how much it is worth. It ran two years ago and has been parked ever since. I need help.

Agree you should post pictures and s/n - are you sure its 1940? If its a 1940 with 4 cyl Continental its likely a 101 Junior or 102 Junior. Info should also be on plate riveted to frame but lots of those are gone by now. I'm not sure about that early, but mid 40's to mid 50's most had s/n steel stamped into top of frame rail or transmission cover on drivers left about where left foot rests. Later tractors would generally be model followed by serial number either in line of below. You may have to scrape gunk off or maybe painted over - but look for letters in model.

to ACEd and Hal, I can't find the serial number, and neither could anyone else in the last few years, so who knows. Plus, the tractor is 40 m away so I can't get to it readily. I was "told" it was a 1940, but don't find anything like it exactly in the pictures available on this site.
Is there some "libary" of sorts of tractors Massey Harris produced? I don't know how to post a picture on this site or would...I'd send the both of you the pictures, but don't have your own email. If you pick this message up and would like to see pictures, I have about 12 of them I can send to each of you and maybe you can figure it out. I appreciate your help.

massey harris did not officially make a 101 junior orchard tractor. they did however make kits to convert their regular standard tread 101 or 102 to an orchard. so there would be no serial numbers to differentiate between the two. but massey"s orchards kits were not very popular and only on is known to exist today that I know of.
also if you just bought this 101 junior orchard tractor off of ebay in the last few weeks. I saw that one too. that is difinately NOT and orchard tractor but in fact just a 101 junior row crop. not rare at all.

so hope this helps.
thanks tom.
