Does anyone know if a disc type brake lining kit is available for the Massey Harris 81, 82, or 20 model tractors? This is the type that surrounds the rear axle inside the axle housing. If so, I would appreciate finding out the name of whatever parts source might have them.

What Centuar described is true. I have a 81, 20, and 22. All have these types of brakes on them and they were re-lined at a clutch and brake shop. Yes, it does require a little work to split the axle housings, slide the axles out and then get the brakes off the, I do not know if any kits that exist anymore.

The only thing about Centaur's response that I said wasn't correct was his mention of a "contracting band". The brake in a MH20 is definitely not a contracting band, it is a floating disc sandwiched between two plates, one fixed and one that is the one that is activated when you apply the brakes. I have had tractors with the contracting band style and also some with expanding bands. This setup is identical to the brakes on a Case model V (not VA) that I have. I have done all the disassembly and will eventually visit one of the "real" clutch and brake shops, I just thought a relining kit would be a simpler way to go. Thanks for the response.

I would not know a MH81-82-20 if I was looking at one .What you have described is an external contracting brake band which can be relined by many brake and clutch places that specialize in rebuilding brake and clutch parts. If you GOGGLE-BRAKE BANDS or BRAKE LINING or BRAKE RIVETS you will find a lot of answers.BEST WISHES,CENTAUR

Nope .... it is not a contracting brake band. It is a system with a floating double sided and lined brake plate and two outer pressure discs, one fixed on the differential casting (inside) and the outer one is activated by the brake pedals and linkages. When the pedal is depressed, the outer pressure disc squeezes itself and the floating plate against the fixed inner disc .... and braking results. All the parts I mentioned here actually surround the rear axle. It is quite a job to remove all of this stuff and get at it. The 101 series and other MH models had the band style that you describe.
