Just bought a 65 utility to use for feeding round bales this winter. The power steering turns to the left with one finger, but to bring it back or turn right takes two men and a strong boy. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment that can be made on the steering shaft and how to do it? there appears to be a turnbuckle adjustment, but I don't want to mess with it before asking for advice.

Thank you,

Jack

Hi,
YEs, this is quite a common problem with 65's and later 100 series tractors. The system works by having an absolute minimum of wear in all points.
The initial turn of the steering wheel should activate the power steering. If this movement is lost in play the effort required to turn the steering will be mechanical and not assisted. Start off by having an assistant turn the steering wheel back and forth. Look for wear in the shaft and bushes in the front axle casting. Observe the activation on the spool on top of the steering cylinder. You will probably have more movement one way than the other. Look also for up and down where the ram rod is attached to the casting..... .in fact everywhere.
At the rear end of the cylinder you should see a large screw and nut with a slot in the screw.
Remove that adjustable barrel and turn the screw down until the taper prevents movement of the top arm against the bottom one. Adjust the barrel so that the pins just fit. Unscrew the large pin SEVEN turns and nip the nut up. This is the initial setting for the system. Try it. You may need to unscrew a further half a turn at a time to gain an improvement. This will not be the answer but it might improve your steering. DON@T FORGET TO split pin the barrel pins.

Your problem is likely worn pins and/or the holes at each end of the turnbuckle. If the pins are worn or if the holes are elongated you will only be able to adjust for power steering in one direction. It is a common problem with the 65.
