I was thinking about purchasing a MF 165 with multi power. I have been using an 8N ford but I need to keep about 60 acres cleaned up and the old Ford is too small. I don't know anything about the multi power. Would this tractor still work even if the multi power stopped working? It sounds like a gamble if the multi power would work or not. Does the multi power work most of the time?

I live in West Virginia and have a 1962 MF 35 with multi-power. The multi-power in my tractor is going bad and will shift on its own when going uphill sometimes. The bad thing is that when you are in low there is no engine braking which on the terrain I work can really be scary. Other than that I am well pleased with the function as designed of the multi-power.

When the mulit-power is working it is great. A tractor with muti-power can't be started by towing. Multi-power is a shift on the go high low range in each individual gear. It is good for when the tractor starts to bog down when bush hogging or pulling a ground engaging implement. There is a lot in the archives on here about multi-power problems and cures. I have it on my 135 and love it. Dave

Hi,
The 165 is basically a sound tractor for general farm or small-holding use where a tractor of higher HP is not needed.
Multi-Power is a good transmission but the operator must know how to use it. First of all you cannot tow a MP tractor to start it.
In addition to the normal 6 gears you have MP 'high' and 'low'. In 'high' you have engine braking going downhill. You do not have it in low and the tractor can run away. You also have a 'hill-hold' feature which when you have a forward gear engaged the tractor will not run backwards unless you press the clutch pedal fully to the floor to disconnect the drive to the pump and PTO. This works in reverse as well so that the tractor will not run forward when you have 'reverse' engaged.
Contrary to many peoiples belief MP does not give you an extra 6 speeds in the strict sense of the word. What is does give you is a slightly higher top speed but also the ability at the flick of a lever to reduce your forward speed by about 30% when heavier crop conditions are encountered for a brief time.
The transmission should not be left in 'low' for any extended period of time. Although the clutch unit is immersed in oil it is possible for the clutch plates to become 'dry' and overheat. If using 'low' you must shift to 'high' from time to time to keep the discs lubricated.
If the MP does not work it could be quite expensive to repair in terms of parts and a lot of labour. Test the tractor thoroughly before buying. Driving quite fast in 5th or 6th on the road, move between high and low. You should feel the drop in speed and should feel a very positive 'jolt' when you go back to high.
Regards
