I had rebuilt a F140 engine and can not use timming lite on # 1 cyl. But, it will time on #4. Does anyone know if it times on #1 or #4. And if it times on #1 does anyone know of a easy way to retime it correctly. I can not really see the marks on gears to time it.

Why can't you use No1 to time it? Are you sure the timing gear is timed correctly? Is the tractor running? Have you brought No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke? Pull No1 sparkplug near the radiator and hold your thumb over the plug hole until you fell compression against your thumb while someone hand cranks the engine. Once you feel that compression you can drop a "large" handle screwdriver in the plug and then watch the screwdriver rise as the engine is slowly cranked. When the screwdriver quits rising
your piston should be at TDC. Your timing marks should be aligned, both valves on No1 should be closed and if this is battery ignition or has a mag the rotor should be pointing to No1 plug tower. Hal

Well, when I put this engine together I did not have a manual to time the cam to the crank. When I use a timing lite it will not time up on #l and run. But it will time up on #4 and run. I have tried to use this tractor for pulls and in the 3100lbs class it will only pull about 85 feet. and I am have a problem with the gov also. Does anyone have a good picture of the way that it is suppose to be correctly? my email address is [email protected].....

You should be able to hook your timing lite to No1 or No4 and see your timing mark when the engine is running. You need to get a good manual for your tractor. You should do the procedure that I sent you earlier. Once you have No1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke look to see where your rotor is pointing and look at the valves on No1 cylinder too. If you get a manual
on your engine it should have the cam gear timing marks in it. If this is a Continental engine you can call these toll free numbers and see if they will send you a picture of the timing gears. Hal

PS: Your governor should be covered in a shop manual.
