Last oil change I switched to Rotella for my Perkins MF35 diesel. Oil pressure went up on the gauge all through the operating cycle. So did oil consumption. It wasn't a big deal so I put in an extra litre here and there and thought it was a good trade-off.

Yesterday when changing the coolant I noticed oil oozing out all around the strainer at the bottom of the engine. Turns out the nuts were all tight. It didn't do this with the MF Dealer's oil.

I haven't noticed any leaks or increased consumption in the Massey Harris 30, and the pressure is better with Rotella.

So do I replace the gaskets on the 35 each oil change or go back to the stickier oil the dealer sells?

Hello Rod. I to have been using the rotella oil in my 35 diesel sinse I bought it and the oil presure stays high throughtout the operating range. I also switched from the old filter to a new spin on with the MF adapter. Not sure about the dealers oil except they charge almost double the price if you watch the sales at Cdn. tire. I also have a few drips when the engine gets good and warm while bushhogging. Keep us informed as to you outcome. Rick

So if you have higher oil pressure, then yes it could leak where it did not before. Higher oil pressure means the overall viscosity was higher than before. Not all oils are the same regardless what they say on the package. Shell diesel oil has a good reputation because it protects well, same as Castrol and Quaker state in car applications. Stick with one that works and don't go back.

Rod

I would suggest you just change the gasket on your next oil change and see if that solves the problem. I have seen several posts on here about different oils and it seems that all brands point to Shell. I use Quaker State in all my vehicles and tractor. My 99 F150 has 173,000 miles on it and does not use a drop of oil. I was told once that it is not type of oil that makes the difference it is the frequency of the oil change. I change every 3,000 in my vehicles and when I did farm the man I worked for changed oil twice during the summer months.

Why by all means, go back to using only 'Special' MF oil! It's just like 'Special' JD oil! These oils are all made by the 'Special Tractor Oil Company', somewhere in Oklahoma (not really!).

They have secret ingredients to prevent or stop oil leaks and to cause your engine to blow up if you don't use them. If you don't believe me...just ask any of the Special Oil experts here on ytmag, they have all the correct answers!

I stopped at the Carmichael JD dealership a few days ago and the fat slob behind the counter told me that JD's 'Special Oil' was refined by Shell AND, if they only could....they (Shell) would quit making the Rotella formulation and sell the JD Special Oil as their own.

I laughed in that retards face and walked out.

Ultimately, you'll have to decide what's best for you.

I had heard that Shell packages the oil for Walmart, can anyone back that up? If it meets the ASAE specs. and the manufacture specs I buy it. The Walmart stuff even by the quart is half the price of the dealers oil that I used to buy by the barrel, so I buy it. If my engine is going to blow up because I am switching oils then there is something really wrong with the engine, I just don't buy the fact of how particular you have to be with oil?

hayray,

something has got to pay the advertising bill....and what's left over, is just more profit for big Oil. That is why the oil (the Big makers) squirt in Walmart cans, sells for less. How many Walmart oil commercials you ever seen? Exactly! I have a neighbor with a '99 Chevy truck that has never had anything but Walmart oil in it...and at 230,000 miles it uses no oil and doesn't smoke.

I wish people would quit being so damned naive! Big Oil owns 95%+ of all the refineries in this country. Therefore, Big Oil makes 95%+ of all the lubricants. When they produce 10-30W...they make one formulation and it gets squirted in every brand of can they have contracted...whether it's their own home brand or Walmart's or Auto Zone's or Billy Bob's. Big Oil isn't going to admit this...because they want you to continue to think if it's in a Green and White bottle marked Quaker State..it is superior to everything else.

The biggest single factor in any engine, where oil is concerned; is keeping the crankcase full! The second factor is changing it occasionally... like twice a year if you feel guilty.

I worked 27 years as railroad engineer for CSX and god knows, I've been around thousands of locomotives.....both older than me and brand new. I hired on in 1977 and they were running engines bought in 1950-51 at that time. They are still using engines bought in 1963..quick math..that's 44 years. Do you know that the oil is NEVER changed in a diesel locomotive, EXCEPT when it goes in for heavy repairs? Let's spell N E V E R (en-ee-vee-ee-arrr). What is heavy repairs? A total rebuild after years of operation..like once every 10 years...and at least a million miles..more like 2 million. Yes, oil is added often because they just naturally use it....even when brand new...and no, they don't run back on the manufacturer bitching about it! There are only two builders in the country...General Electric and General Motors. CSX locally buys Valvoline 50 weight high detergent by the tanker truck load. That is what is in the engine year round....whether the locomotive is in Michigan or Florida. Here, they buy Valvoline brand because the refinery is 20 miles away. I am sure they buy whatever brand is available at other points on the railroad and if Walmart was to offer the low bid...they'd get it from them.

People are ridiculous when it comes to motor oil. You'd think there is either a Genie or a Gremlin hiding in every bottle, depending on what label is on the outside.

mark is partially right when he said:

my dad worked for a fuel/oil business (valvoline) for 30yrs. i have been to a bottling plant. when i was there, they were bottling several different brands. the only difference were the additive formulations.
