Its always #1 cyl at tdc on these continental engines, ensure plug wires on center cylinders are attatched to the right cylinders , for if not it'll still run , but backfire through the intake on loading or unloading the engine at idle it'll run good, just remenber your plg wire order, very important, on account of bought a 30 with similar engine taht sat up many years , got it moving & drove home after paying 1,500 for it, a #6 mower came ith it too. got home & started changine the obvious things like gas filter which was half plugged, wires were old & blue sparks emmitting, new plugs, changed oil in air filter, plus engine & rear end & hyd system & antifreeze, still ran rough, couldn't figure it out, sawed wood on the buzz saw with it, & couldn't go up hill in road gear... pulled the head & cleaned valves & checked springs, needed new ones, lashed the valves & still no power, then while doing another valve lash check noted wires imporoperly connected, followed what it was originally, since wires that came off with coil & cap were from wayyy bacckkk, it'd been like this for years.. ohh boy...corrested this issues & ran fine talk about a strong tractor of this size, terrific tractor to rake hay & mow with, not to mention belt work as well, won't part with it for anything, have it a 444 & 555 all prarie models gas & diesel respectively.
