I have a 135 with the power assisted steering, the cylinder turns the pitman shafts. I tried some hydraulic fluid in the steering pump and after running for a while the system leaks. Someone recommended atf fluid and that just leaks all the time. I took everything apart again and inspected the seals and they look good. Will reducing the relief pressure help or should i try some other fluid? Or both?

Not ATF anymore in reply to Thomas Cook, 10-14-2007 10:35:39
Talk to Big Dean. The composition of ATF has changed since the owner's manual was printed and now MF is saying to use the same transmission hydraulic fluid you use everywhere else on your tractor.

The new ATF will eat up the cylinder seals. I had to put new seals in my steering control column to learn of that little detail.

Thanks Gerald, i had the shaft for the steering cylinder made by a friend. The shaft may also be a little too rough. I think i will get it chromed before i reassemble, the seals only had about 2 - 3 hours running on them when they started to leak.

Yes, I had one made and I think the machine shop ground it to make it smoother. Its worked with a new seal for years now. Plating won't make it smoother unless its super smooth to begin with and then ground after plating. Lots of polishing is normal before and after plating.

If the seals leak then it doesn't matter how they look, they need to be replaced and maybe the shaft polished so it doesn't chew them up or is big enough the seals reach it.

My MF-135 owner's manual calls for ATF type A or non-foaming hydraulic fluid. With good seals mine has been holding ATF type A for years.
