A friend of mines neighbor is retiring from farmer and is going to sell his Massey 1100 for $4000. I've never owned or operated a M.F. but it appears to be a good solid tractor.Although I have not heard it run yet. Could you help with advice and experience, pros and cons. Thanks, Mark in In.

The 1100 series tractors are very good tractors. Plenty of power and good on fuel. If the tractor is in decent shape $4000.00 is a very good deal. Massey has a kit for the brakes, so if the engine stalls you still have brakes. If you want more power you can put a 1130 manifold and turbo and get 120hp. The 1100 and 1130 are basically the same 354cu. inline 6.

ErnieD had some very good points. I have an 1100 and am very pleased with it. I paid $6000.00 for it in 1997. It had 3600 hrs, the paint was faded but it was a very tight tractor and everything worked. In your case it depends on the condition of the tractor. If it is a diesel, doesn't smoke or leak fluids, and has low hours and good tin, I think $4000 would be a great buy. These tractors don't sell for very much, but they are extremely good cheap horsepower. Parts are still available and there are a lot of salvage yards that sell parts too. I would avoid any that have gas engines. These are good engines, but the fuel cost would be un-godly today. Let me know how it turns out, or if I can answer any questions. David

My brother had one, so did his neighbor. My brothers steering would bi-center the tie rod end and lock up hard left. Have to get a bar to pop it back. Shift linkage was worn, the pins and holes were sloppy and hard to get into park. Hydraulic pumps were worn and depth control plowing was sluggish. On the 1080, 1100 and 1130 models you have no brakes without the engine turning. Do not stall out. Interesting going up a hill with 10T of silage and you can only restart with the clutch down.

Prolly a decent tractor if not wore out.
