I am the proud owner of a 1975 MF 255 diesel tractor with 203 engine, multipower transmission and independent pto. This is one sweet tractor and we are great pals.
I have found a 1984 MF 274 with a 236 diesel engine and mfwd and a MF front end loader, all with low hrs. I could really make good use of that mfwd and loader. Here's my question. With condition and price being favourable is the 274 as good a tractor as my 255? Was the mfwd reliable and trouble free? Will its life with the front end loader have caused any problems with the front end or hydraulics. Lastly its been traded at a JD dealer, why would anyone do such a thing?

Maybe they just had a weak moment with all the money they saved on the MF? I don't know much about the 274 but the 236 is an excellent engine. It was the first Perkins designed specifically for a tractor but has been used in just about everything. I heard over 4,000,000 have been made. Don't know for sure if it's true but they are a very popular engine. Dave

Hi,
We do not have those model numbers in the UK but as a general answer the 236 engine probably with a balancer unit fitted in the sump is generally sound and very reliable. Rusting core plugs are really the only items that we have had any problems with. People rarely buy a 4WD with loader to look at it. Inspect the condition of the front axle carefully. Jack it up and check for wear in the wheel bearings, hub swivels and particularly the axle pivot, play and end-float.
Check the backlash between the prop-shaft and wheel hubs. A lot of small wear areas can add up to a big bill. A careful look at the general condition will tell you a lot about the history of the tractor.
