I have an 81 M-H that seems to have a problem with timing. When the govenor opens the tractor falls on it"s face. Do I adjust clockwise or counter clockwise.

This tractor has not ran in 24 years. Everything has been rebuilt from top to bottom and front to back. It has taken me(on and off as time and money has allowed) 7 years to complete this project. It fired up for the first time sunday. It ran well except for the timing issue.

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Make sure that your advance mechanism is working. You"ll need a timing light for that. Let it idle and then advance the throttle and note that the timing advances. If it does then make sure it advances per the spec advance curve. If it does and theproblem still occurs, check your spark to make sure it"s FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE. If it is, then start looking at the fuel delivery and the carb. Make these checks in the order I have set them down. Most problems (80-85%) with poor performance a related to the ignition system. about 10% are due to the fuel delivery/dirty carb.
