Got a 1085 with non working fuel gauge. UNDER CAB no less. How do I test gauge and can I reach sending unit in tank without lifting cab? Any help appreciated.

To check if it's the guage, wire, or sending unit, remove the wire from the sending unit and ground it out on the tank (it'll have to be running so the oil PSI switch turn the rest of them on) If the needel moves when grounded, it's the sending unit. If it doesn't, it's either the wire or the guage. Try hooking a new wire to the guage and try the same thing.

My opionion, if the guage doesn't move when the wire is grounded, it's more than likely it's a bad guage. They can be had for a pretty reasonable price from AGCO as well too.

The 285 is about the same as the 1085, and I think the cowel between the hood and dash has to be removed to get at the sending unit, but I'm not sure. You should be able to see where it is from the hole for the filler neck.

You have to drain out the fuel, remove the hose that goes between the 2 tanks, and drop the rt. hand tank straight down, Sending unit is on top of tank. On the model 1085 without cab there is a plate on the floorboard that you can remove and get to where the wire is hooked on to the sending unit.
