I smelled sulfuric acid and noticed the amp meter was pegged. Shut down the engine and hit the regulator with a wrench. Turned it back on and amp meter is normal. Ok so I replace the regulator. I had my son-in-law do it. I told him to be sure to polarize it. He jumped the battery to the F terminal on the regulator instead of the generator. The instructions said DO NOT do that. When he saw his mistake he jumped batt to gen and got his spark but now the regulator doesn"t work, at least it"s not charging the battery. Did he ruin the new regulator?

Yup. That's why the instructions say to not do that.

Gerald,
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm just puzzeled by what could burn out in two seconds on the new regulator by shorting batt to field in polarization process.

It doesn't look burned anywhere, doesn't smell burned either. But it doesn't work.

I did all the generator test's spelled out and the motor test works. I put the old regulator back in, polarized the generator and it puts out fine but the old regulator is charging the battery at 30 amps. The new regulator not at all. The old regulator also looks fine, meaning no obvious burning or burning smell.

My guess is either the regulator cutout relay won't pick or the battery is actually very low but it reads 12.5 volts.

With the old regulator the generator puts out about 14.4 volts at that 30 amp charge measured at the terminals at about 800 rpm

With the new regulator the voltage at the battery terminals at 800 rpm is 12.5 and doesn't move.

If the battery were fully charged it should read about 13.5 volts shouldn't it?

I'm reasoning that the new reg isn't allowing charge and the old one charges fully all the time. Further thinking is the only way to prove it is to try another new reg. What do you think?

Thanks
Harry

Not after its burned inside.
