Can or should it be done? I finally have everything working properly on my diesel 1975 175. Now I want to add power and tear it up. I know turbocharging a diesel will add power and improve efficiency (my 2007 Silverado w/ Duramax, chip, intake, exhaust is no slouch and gets 18-19 mpg on the highway, if you keep your foot out of it). Are there other MF models using this Perkins engine with a turbocharger? The tractor is mainly used for mowing/baling hay. What do you guys think? Teenage boy coming out in me or embracing technology?

I've always been a big Massey fan. I grew up on 'em. My first new tractor was a 150 Massey. Just a few years after buying it, I needed a bigger tractor. It was between a Ford 5000 and a 175 Massey. The Ford dealer made a sweet deal. I got the 5000. I though I needed even more tractor. So, I bought an M&W turbo kit for the still fresh 5000. It was a 1974 model. Kit went on in 1976. 67 HP turned into 80, which soon got jacked up to 90. After the crankshaft snapped in the middle of the rear main during 1979 planting season, I sold the 5000 for pennies on the dollar of what it should have been worth and bought another tractor.

Moral of the story? 67 hp is much better than a broken tractor.

Ah, the voice of reason. Thanks for the input fellas. Looks like I better leave it alone. Wife won"t allow another tractor on the farm, so I"ll make do. At least I know where to look for if I change my mind!

Hello,
Don't do it unless you want to rebuild your engine. Fitting turbo to a worn engine will cause problems in terms of stresses on worn components, oil pressure and the cooling system, not to mention other components down the line.
If you need more power look for a bigger tractor.

I think that the 175 is fitted with the perkins AD4.236 engine,a turbocharged variant of this is fitted to the 1990's 390T and 3060/3070 tractors which made these tractors into quite powerful but compact machines. The 390T was fitted with a wastegate turbo and around here several farmers have fitted turbo kits to 290's,590's and 390's all with the perkins 248 engine. remember that turbocharging will impose extra stresses on the engine and its cooling system especially

Of course it's the teenage boy coming out in you. Let him out and do it.

Why tear/screw up a good MF175? Just buy a larger tractor with turbo. MF spent millions engineering the balance of engine/drive train of that MF175 - leave it alone is my 2 cents. Tom

You finally have everything working properly and you are thinking of messing with it. I think you answered your own question regarding a turbo. Dave

I believe the 390 T has a perkins 136 with turbo about 90 hp I wonder about the clutch in the 175 with all them hosses up front just a thought
