Have a perkins 3cyl 1961 MF203. Engine rebuild about 4-5 months back by a company. 30 hours on rebuild. Just changes Oil and it was somewhat black but still a bit translucent. Oil pressure buries the needle at start and drops to high green after 1-2 hours usage. I have noticed a small amount of blue smoke at idle from the exhuast. Nothing major.... in fact from 70 feet away you cannot even see it. Does not increase (in fact seems to disappear with usage)... but leave it set idle and you get a bit. No black smoke at start. Starts great 6V system and it fires right up even in 40 degree weather.

..... ..... Question..... ..... ....

Anything to worry about..... or am I just being a worry wart?!

You need to run it a bit to break it in. Don't let it idle for very long and work it hard intermittently so the rings seat. It may take 100 or more hours to break in. Check the oil level everytime you use it. I had the engine rebuilt in my Cat and it had to come out again because the rings didn't seat. It's very rare for that to happen. They told me to let it warm up for about 5 minutes or so and work it fairly hard. Keep an eye on temperature. It is common to use a bit of oil on a fresh rebuild but it should be within reason. My new engine used way too much at first but now it went to the add mark after about 3 1/2 tanks of fuel and stayed there for another tank or so. Then I filled it up to level and it's good. My oil pan holds 12 litres so they said it was OK to run a little low just to monitor it. Normally I keep it topped up. Some engines set their own oil level however. Dave

Sounds like a good tight rebuild.

Not so much to worry about, over time and when everything gets seated in the oil pressure will be more int he normal zone and the smoke will go away.

If you're really concerned about the pressure and smoke, you can run a lighter weight oil and that should help. It's not uncommon for a good rebuild to have a higher than normal oil pressure and a little smoke.
