Anyone know offhand the gearbox oil capacity of a 1960 MF35 Gas?
Just resurrecting one which has some water in the gearbox

Neil:

There is only one sump that is common to the transmission, hydraulic system and differential.

The total capacity is nearly 8 gallons.

Fill it slowly as it takes quite a while for the oil to flow through the needle bearings between the transmission and the hydraulic sump in order to equalize the levels to get an accurate reading at the dipstick. Filling it too quickly invariably results in an overfill.

Thanks for the info. I recently purchased a MF50, disc and plow to use around my 3 acre garden. I found some info on the gearbox and trans and hydraulic system being one unit but saw separate drains and wasn"t sure.

I do have a question about engine oil viscosity. I was told to use SAE20 for most of the year but to switch to SAE30 if the weather was really hot. It seems to me that most older tractors used SAE30 weight. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks Dean, because it has water in it I have been told after draining the gearbox transmission to but either kerosine or diesel in the gearbox to clean out the water and sludge. Do you have any thoughts on this? Does it seem like a good idea?
Thanks again
