I am having a problem taking this valve spool apart to replace o-rings and seals. I posted a picture under parts and pieces on this site. I don't know how to attach a photo within this message. I really need to get this tractor ready to go to work. Maybe Big Dean or David P can help? Of course if anyone else with knowledge of this valve would respond I would really be happy!!!!

Thanks for your help in the past. Attached is a photo of the power steering control valve on my MF 150. The text in the IT repair manual states carefully insert a small punch through port (B) and into drilling (C) of the control valve spool. Insert a second punch through pin hole (F) in end of valve rod (24) and unscrew rod end (24) from valve (17) by turning rod end counter-clockwise.

I tried to feel the hole (C) by inserting a 3/32 allen wrench into port (B), but couldnt feel any drilling hole (C). I did rotate the valve spool and could feel the spool turning inside the housing with the end of the allen wrench.

What am I doing wrong? Has anyone replaced the o-rings and seals in these valves?

Thanks again, Tom from Buckeye Lake.

Tom,

I just completed a rebuild on my 175"s cylinder. I think that the port you want to put the small punch in is the other one, with the line attached in the picture. It seems that my manual had the same confusion. I think you have to pull out on the spool to find the hole. I would soak the end with PB Blaster first to ease removal. Be very careful not to damage the inside of the spool or the end that the pin attaches to. Be sure everything is clean and burr free on the assembly. I found it easier and cheaper to purchase the entire seal kit rather than individual parts. Go ahead and replace the pins on the linkage if needed, it will help tighten up the steering. Hope this helps.

JB, I got it!!!!! !! Had to remove cylinder and put it in my vice. Spool just wouldn't unscrew from clevis. I used a small screw driver to punch a hole in the seal and pry out. I compressed the spring with a long bolt between the valve spool and linkage arm then the hard part, getting the wrap snap ring out. Not really that bad, just couldn't see the starting edge, had to get my magnifing glass out.

O-rings .95
Seal 4.50
No leaks now, priceless.

Glad you got it. Yeah, that "wrap" snap ring is a booger. The manual shows a regular internal snap ring, but no luck. During reassembly, I thought, How in the world do you get that ring in there and compress the spring? They kind of skipped over that part in the manual. I finally got it all together and then spent two days adjusting it! I hope it's a long time before I have to face that again! Sometimes you wonder if maybe you should just have the dealer do it and save yourself hours of work and sanity!
