Is there a kit out there to convert a 44 special from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground? I am not sure what is involved, If i were to make my own harness would I need a diode kit? I know that the amp guage probably wouldnt work but I am not too concerned right now. This is low budget but I need it reliable. What kind of alternator should I try to find? I have all kinds of chrysler alternators from the 60"s. someone please point me in the right direction this is needed on an auger tractor. my cell is 507 381 7576

When you change from 6 V positive ground to 12V negative ground, remember that the primary ignition wire between the distributor and the coil has to be connected to the coil terminal with the same sign as the ground, i.e. the (-)terminal for the 12 V negative ground alternator.

OK - but be careful. Like Gerald says, there may be underlying problems that a 12 V system only makes worse. If a 6 V barely spins it, you should have warm-to-the-touch places that would be problems. Good luck

Why?? If your battery cables are good, connections are tight and the battery is charged, there will be no problems with the 6 V system. I cannot figure out why any of them are converted to 12 V. I have a 44-6 I'm changing back to 6 V. I have 7 tractors, the newest one a 1952, and every problem I have had with the 6 V system is traced back to those three areas.

It hardly swings the engine over in the summer when it is 80 degrees and I need the tractor in the winter when it is 0 degrees more than anything. I have tried new cables and bought a brand new 6 volt john deere battery (wasnt cheap) I need 12 volt.

Are your battery cables FAT, say 00 gauge? Walmart specials kill the starting on 6 volts because of the voltage drop.

The ammeter won't care about the voltage, though an alternator may push more current through it than it can indicate. A new 60 amp alternator is the cheapest part of a 12 volt conversion.

You need a regulator for the alternator that matches the alternator and the combination needs to be wired like it was in the car or truck.

You need to swap the wires on the ammeter and the ignition coil when you change from positive to negative ground. And, of course, on the battery which can prove to be a pain because of the differences in post diameters which may lead to a couple new battery cables.

You also need to be sure of ground connections being clean and of the starter having good bearings and brushes. If the 6 volt starter is worn down and the armature is dragging on the field poles it will smoke on 12 volts, otherwise if not used for minutes at a time the 6 volt starter will run fine on 12 volts and it spins the same direction no matter which battery polarity.

thanks for the tips. I am going to put on new cables. the old ones are thick but I am sure they are origional. I might try swapping starters off my dads 44 and see if it makes a difference. I will keep you informed.

The starter switch can be your high resistance point too. Its just a simple copper contact that can pit and also warp if it gets warm.
