Hello, I have just acquired a 1959 FE35 serial number SDM 1637250. However the lift cover was cracked, so I had the cover welded up and refitted it to the tractor. When testing the operation of the levers, the position control lever seemed to work OK, but when the lever was put into the draft response part of the quadrant the lift arms began to raise so I quickly put the lever back into the position control part of the quadrant. I then moved the draft control lever upwards from the 'neutral/setup' position between the 2 spots on the quadrant; the lift arms raised straight away and went to the top of their travel and stayed there under pressure - I moved the levers back to their original positions but the lift arms stayed at their maximum lift position still under pressure. Before I could get to the engine stop button there was a loud bang and the cover had split in two. The front section had been pushed forward and sheared 4 of the cover bolts. I suspect that the lift cover is not original as the grey paint is a different shade to the rest of the tractor and there are also visible traces of gold paint ie pre 1957. It seems likely that as the original/welded crack was in the same place on the cover it caused by the same malfunction. (Although the piston is a 2 1/2 inch diameter piston, which I believe is correct for this date of tractor) I obviously need a replacement cover but how do I know that it is the correct one for the tractor. Whilst the cover was being welded I borrowed another cover to help get the hay in and discovered that the lift pipe from the pump was a different length. Eventually I ended up with 3 lift pipes; 305mm, 310mm and 315mm in length - the shortest pipe fitted the split cover. When comparing the two covers it seems that the thickness of the casting varies below the hydraulic cap. There is a number on the lift cover but is that a part number or a casting number? I have reached the limit of my knowledge and internet research, can anybody add anything further that might stop me from destroying another lift cover? Thank you in advance Guy Jeffs

MF148 thank you for the response. I have also received some information from another source who said -

"The top cover and hydraulic system changed on these tractors from serial No. 65685 (mid 1957). It was the earlier lift capacity tractor which had the 2.500 ins diameter bore hydraulic cylinder. Tractors like yours should have the 3.000ins cylinder. Maximum hydraulic pressure remains the same at about 2500 lbs.ins.sq. If operating correctly, the pressure relief valve should prevent this (cover splitting) happening; so either the pressure relief valve is not operating correctly or there is another problem with the adjustment which could be because the crack in the cover has upset the adjustments."

So I need to identify and find the correct top cover with a 3 inch piston, I will also need to get the pressure relief valve checked or replaced.
