The 30's manifold went on without difficulty until I got to the carburetor. Seems the throttle plate jams against the new casting. Solved the problem by bolting on the additional gasket along with the old one. Previous mechanic had left the carb a bit loose for the same reason, I guess. Now the engine runs much better, with steady power and little noise.

Why do people like old tractors? A manifold's a pretty major project for someone of my skills, but I was able to complete it in under an hour while sitting on the front tire in the shade of a tree. Oh yeah, everything possible fits a 9/16" wrench.

Not sure about why we do it, but as for me, I like to steal stuff from the hands of time. And the lines from stuff from the 50's get to me everytime. Not that I would like to live in the 50's due to the racial segregation, cold war, negligible safety controls, emerging human rights, etc. but damn they had style. Below are pics of my tractor, my dad's car, and the boat is from antiqueboatdotcom.

There is something about working on something built by someone who is long dead, likely from chronic exposure to the stuff I am looking at, and who likely was repressing some memory of some beach halfway around the world. This may not have been what they took to that beach, but it was what they had come home to.

Just grasping at straws and trying to recapture our youth, I think. Memories of days gone by that will never return, but it gives us a taste of the sweetness of earlier days.Next phase is trying to find God.You did good, my friend.
