I have a massey 35 that I have a problem starting in the winter months. I don"t think the glow plug works. I have 2 questions.
1-is it hard to change? Are there universal ones?
2-is there supposes to be a "setting" on the ignition where it is on glow? My key seems to go from one spot to start, no in between? Thanks
Greg

David and Greg,
Is there a possibility that there are no glow plugs? My 35 doesn't have them. It has a pre-heater for the fuel. Hope that's the correct terminology. There is a position on the ignition that preheats the fuel. It doesn't work as far as I can tell, but I don't have a lot of cold needs for my tractor. Just a thought. I will be interested in any responses.

Hello Greg,
Is your MF 35 fitted with a Perkins 3 cylinder engine? If so it is easy to check and change if necessary. First of all connect a 12V test lamp between the supply cable to the thermostart and earth. The thermostart is located in the inlet manifold on the right hand side of the engine just above the fuel lift pump. To remove it you will require a 1 1/16 spanner. Several switch types may be fitted. The original had an 'off', then turn clockwise to start. For a cold start turn anti-clockwise to 'HS', (Heat start)for 5 to 10 seconds and then on further to the 'start' position. Later switches should have an 'off', 'Ign', 'Heat', and 'Start' position. In the 'heat' position your test lamp should light. If the current is OK remove the thermostart and inspect the coil inside for dampness and presence of diesel. Check the inside of the inlet manifold for any signs of wetness.
If this is present the thermostart has failed and will need to be replaced. An approximate price is around £15-18, $30-35. £-cylinders are generally good starters so you may have problems elsewhere, starter, battery, fuel etc.
Cheers
