I am kind of bummed out about my MF 1085. It has a total of 3400 hours on it. This is a 1975 year model. The head gasket went out so I had it replaced. Well after about 100 hours on it it went again. The mechanic did not replace the studs, but said he would install new ones this time as well as check the head to see it it needs to be milled down.

I also had an issue with the PTO and the tractor was split and new parts put in. After using it pretty hard for hay season I notice there is not enough hydraulic pressure to lift the disc mower. Had the mower cylinder rebuilt and same problem so it is the tractor. (Round baler also is real slow to raise and lower the hatch) Mechanic says no magic fix with a bypass valve or anything and tractor will have to be split again. The multi-power seems to work fine and gives a crisp shift when engaged.

And then I noticed the clutch didn't have any free play left. Cut the floor slot out wider and it looks like it will run a while, but in my opinion the clutch is on its final legs.

All of this adds up to a lot of repair cost. The tractor and cab otherwise is in great shape. Any suggestions on what to do? As in sell it as is or fix it??

The head gasket problem was normal at those hours.
Massey issued a service bulletin which states to
replace the studs with this p/n's: 17-746215M1
and 17-1476 232X1. Then retorque to new higher
torque. This is more the problem than the mechanic
as it happened to many of the 1085's. I am sorry
my bulletins are packed away right now, but please
check with a dealer for the new torque specs and
after the higher torque studs are installed. Good
luck, Chuck

As i said on here more than once,we had that endless cycle with our 1085 untill we finally traded it in.If you don't fix it right, you will only get scrap price for it.If you decide to trade it in,find out what it will cost to fix it right, than what it will be worth in on a trade for a 6 cyl or newer 4 cyl tractor.Than compare that to what you can get for a trade as is.Probably won't be much difference either way. Those tractors will give you many years of economical service if used for 60 hp tractor jobs, work them like they have 100 hp,and yes they will do that for awhile, then you will just keep spending and spending.pd

The 285, 1080, 1085 and a few models combines all used the A4-318. They are a good engine overall. Ours got a replacement engine at 5500 hours. The head gasket blew and there was a cylinder sleeve that was cracked between cylinders. We located a tractor with rear end problems and bought the engine for a song. The local ag repair shop rebuilt every inch of it and installed it in about 4 days. The tractor runs like new. New clutch and bearings at the same time. I would not hesitate to say its better than new.

I agree with marlow, if the mechanic didn't check the head the 1st time, you need a new mechanic. It was a common problem on the 318 perkins (285, 1085, and one other model, I forget) and it needs to be milled down a little bit and then a new gasket put in.

For the clutch- there is a way to adjust it. Cutting out the floor for the clutch was a bad bad bad bad idea. Do yo have an owners manual for it? Adjustment is covered in it. Our 285 has over 6,000 hours on the original clutch.

I'd say adjust the clutch the right way, weld something in the slot so it's no gonna go too far, fix the hydraulics, and use it. If you sell this one and buy another, you'd probably end up with the same problems or worse with the next one.

to to be a smart as- but i'd find a new mechanic!if he did not mill head or at least check it he he is not doing things right. as to the clutch 3400 hrs is about right for it to go if it's still oem. why would you cut the floor board to get more free play ADJUST it the way it should be done

You are suppose to retorque the head after 50 hours of run time. When my 1085 cracked a sleeve, I replaced the sleeves, had head reworked , and replaced the head bolts.

retorque is not called for any more with the new gaskets but every thing else you said should be done
