How much gas is enough?

My engine is not getting enough gas. I disconnected the gas line at the carburetor and no gas came out. Then I disconnected it at the sediment bowl and gas came flowing out. The gas line had some gas in it. I blew air into it from both directions and no debris came out.

Do tractors that do not have a fuel pump need significantly more gas in the tank than what is necessary for it to just flow past the sediment bowl?

You may need to ream the pipe with baling wire. I've seen a tractor fuel line plugged practically solid with varnish. That took mechanical reaming to open up the line, just air wouldn't have any effect.

You should be able to run it out of gas no problem. Sounds like you've got something in your line yet, or it came out so fast you didn't see it.

And no matter what you do, DON'T put in an in-line filter. They act just like a restriction in the line and don't let the gas flow through fast enough. I know some guys have put them in and they work if you find exactly the right one, but the sediment bowl is very efficient at what it does, and doesn't need another filterdown stream.

I've used a Fram G-2 filter in line on my TO-30 and a lawn mower fuel filter from Walmart and have never had a fuel restriction problem, even with minimum fuel in the tank. I know a lot of folks worry about that with a gravity feed system but I have run that way for over 5 years with no difficulties.

2 things in your favor: Your small tractor doesn't use as much gas as compared to a 60 HP tractor, and you maust have found a filter that allows enough flow through it. MOst guys use the same filter that's on their little rider lawn mower, post here saying it doesn't run and it ran fine before they put the inline filter in.

I'm one of those dyed-in-the-wool guys who absolutely will not put an inline filter in any tractor I have, unless that's what it was designed for. The sediment bowls work great, never had a problem with dirty gas getting through one of those. Diesel needs to be a little bit cleaner than gas, but any deisel engine will have 2 filters, if not at the least 1, ahead of the injection pump.
