Have been told only the 1947 models were painted black in commemoration of Massey Harris's 100th year celebration. Dad bought a new 1947 MH 44, but I can't remember the engine color being black. Can't say about the 55, but it seems red come to my mind.Anyone have a copy of "Massey Harris Tractor Data" book? I think it the paint color info is in it.

I have read that they were black from the factory. I know my 55 was a repaint, but the engine's first coat was black. I bet they came from Continental that way and were just bolted in.

If they were like the 44 the first year or two they were built they were black, after that they started painting them red.----- --Harold

The engine is the Continental J382D.
Think they were originally Red but have seen them painted both Red and Black ??
