MH 30 quits, gets fixed

After a week of work, my MH 30 suddenly quit last night. None of the ususal remedies revived it. Turns out the spark had failed. Bought plugs, points, condensor and coil. The coil did the job.

Trouble is the ignition specs for this tractor involve 6 volt components, and mine has an alternator. I bought a 12v coil which requires an external resistor, but I did not spring for the resistor. What will happen if I run it this way? On which side of the coil do I put the resistor?

To be safe I left the old points in.

Thanks,

Rod

You burn up the coil because it's basically a 6V coil without the resistor and with 12V your primary current will be doubled causing an overheat condition. That'll happen before you have a chance to burn the points. Get yourself a NAPA IC-14-SB coil (~$15 US) as it is a true 12 V coil with the appropriate reasistance built in.

Your points will last longer by installing a ballast resistor, there are 12 volt coils available with builtin resistors. Like the 1C14SB coil from Napa. Cost is around $40.00. Your ballast resistor is installed between your ignition switch and your coil. Hal

Thanks. I'll pick one up and install it with the new points.
