I have a MF 253 that is losing power. I was shredding today and it did fine for the 1st 4 ac but then it started losing power at the end. It was not smoking and/or running hot. It puffs a small amount of black smoke when I rev up the RPMs. It starts and idles fine. They hydraulics are still strong. Could this be the fuel filter or the air filter or something worse? I have not had any warning lights to come on. I took my air hose and blew out the air filter but it still needs to be replaced. I will replace the fuel filter on Monday. Ive had the tractor for about 3 years and put approx 300 hrs on it. Thanks for your help.

Greg, it has been my experience when bush hogging you tend to stir up a LOT of dust and small particles of grass/weeds. These will clog an air filter pretty quick and a radiator so keep an eye on the Temperature gauge. How old is the water pump and anti-freeze? How hot was the air temp? Yes, reduced air flow will affect the power. IF, after changing out the filters(including the air), the power loss continues I would be checking the compression and looking for increased oil usage. It "could" be that the rings are beginning to wear resulting in lost power. Also insure your fuel is clean and not old or contaminated and your tank is clean. You could have gunk in your fuel lines, too.
