Pushing the differential lock handle forward does not seem to engage. It seems like it hits a stop and does not want to go into a lockup gear. Does anyone have a idea what could be wrong? Thanks

Hello Lloyd -

It was rust on ours.

Ours has a casting rotated by a ball on the bottom of the operating lever. This casting has a tang on the end in the axle which moves the internal rod. If this casting is not moving (ours was rusted), this could be your problem.

You might get it by squirting some WD40 on it but we had to pull ours apart.

If your casting is moving, then the problem is further in - loose/broken actuating fingers, or a stripped coupling. We stripped one once by engaging the lock while the wheels were spinning.

Another setup on the 40 has a cam on the end of the control rod. This operates directly on the internal rod, and can be accessed by removing a casting with 4 capscrews, to tell whether the 3/4" +/- rod can be pushed toward the center - this operates the lock coupling.

Hope yours is as simple as rust.

Jack,
I have read several of your responses. You seem to be a wealth of knowledge. I had also wondered about the 3-point not raising until the wheels begin to move. Thanks for the info. Would you happen to know where I might find a sevice/owners manual?

Thanks for the information.
The rod that goes into the housing is only moving about 1/8", until the "bell shaped piece" contacts the housing. I do not know if this is normal or not.
