My neighbor has a Massey F. I do not know the year or model but I found some numbers on the trans - 183253M5. Problem is he was brush-hoggin in 3rd gear and now it will not shift out of 3rd. This tractor has high/low addtional trans - and that shifter works fine. I tried moving it with the pto in off position and high/ low shifter in all three positions (engine running - clutch disengaged). Also tried banging on it while first engaging the clutch - no help. Cannot get it free. Any suggestions???

This is straight from Big Dean - "Getting the main shift lever unstuck
Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. If hung in second or third gear you have to pry on the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. if hung in second pry the fork toward the front of the tractor. If hung in third pry the fork toward the back of the tractor. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them".
And a little more information to help prevent the problem in the future, more information from Big Dean.
Is there any pressure on the transmission? The tractor should be on level ground or at least, brakes locked so the gear will move freely. You should also move the hi-lo range to neutral. Also, after you get it moving again, Big Dean always suggests applying pressure downward on the shifter knob when changing gears and after mine got stuck a couple more times, I started doing that and it only gets stuck now when my neighbor borrows it and forgets. One other thing, I wouldn't suggest force, but I use a very small pry bar simply because it's handier than a screw driver and has a slight bend that easily slips behind the gear I am prying. I am able to apply steady, firm pressure without using brute force. Hope this helps. C. T.

well I tried turning the engine in reverse - actually backed the tractor a few feet - no help. The I pulled the trans filler plug. I can see 3 gears (reverse is probably down on the opposite side), I can rotate all 3 gears as 1 unit, clockwise and counter clockwise hwen the clutch is disengaged or if the clutch is engaged I can do it the same if the High/Low shifter is in neutral. (This is a diesel and you must have that shifter in nuetral to start).
With everything engaged I can rotate the gears just a very little. I cannot see the shift forks at all. Any other suggestions?

Take the oil filler cap off the top of tranny near gearshift. Then take a long stout screwdriver or pry bar and work it around till you find the stuck gear. Work it back and forth a bit and you'll feel it pop loose. I've done this on both a MF 65 and a MF 35.
