102 GS?

Last night my Dad bought a Massey Harris tractor for about $150. It still has to get to the farm, but I got a decent look at it today at the auction site.

I can't find the serial number, but it's got a six-cylinder flathead engine, and what I'm pretty sure is "102 GS" on the hood.

to further confuse me, I gather there is actually TWO versions of the same model: A junior, and a Senior. what is the difference of the two?

I take it the GS indicates it's a gas engine?

Where is the serial number on these tractors? There is a plate on the left side of the engine, but it's too faded to read anything.

What are the production years for the 102?

And finally, how good a tractor is it? Are there any weak points I should look out for while restoring it? Me and Dad may use this tractor for baling.

I'll run the serial number by here if I find it.

Thanks!

Chris

If nobody else replies, I guess I'll have to. The 101 and 102 Seniors had the 6cylinder engines. The 101 Senior had the F226 Continental, and the 102 Senior had the 244 Cubic inch Continental engine designed to burn distillate or kerosene. Later when distillate became less popular, the 102's were the designated tractors for export, and the 101 Seniors were domestic models.

The 101 Jr and 102 Jr's were four cylinder models.

The serial number plate was originally on the left side of the tractor, down on the tub frame near where the clutch would be. More than likely gone. On top of the trans housing, behind the clutch pedal just to the front of the gear box cover, you'll will find the serial number stamped in the casting. You may have to do some scraping, but it's there. You can check the year by going to Tractor Data. com, or to the left column under Research and Info. I restored a 101 Senior Standard. Tough tractors, and you can't seem to hurt those Continental engines. I left my email open if you would like me to send a picture of my restored Senior...

Hi Dave ,,,, actually in the first few years of production, the 101's were the gassers and the 102's were the distillate versions. Then in about 1943 or so, some changes were made and the 102's became the designation for the exported versions (and the 101's were USA only), for example those coming to Canada (which you put on "Canadian" rear panels on your Senior in Idaho. How are things in Texas?
