I was just at the local MF dealer getting some oil and fuel filters for my 1969 MF 165 when I decided to go check out their new utility 3600 series tractors in 45- 75 hp range. I was surprised to see they no longer use Perkins diesel engines, but now have Sisu diesel engines made in Scandinavia -Finland. Are these any good? A friend is shopping for a new tractor in the 50 -55-hp range and I was wondering if these are worth recommending. All I know is I will not part with my 165- I doubt the new tractors could hold up to it over time.

The Sisu engines are the best engines you can get in a tractor. Awesome power and super fuel economy. I do agree it's sad to see perkins getting exploited by Cat.

M-F have used those Sisu (Valmet) engines for at least since 1987ish in the big 3600 series tractors and the Dronninborg built combines. There were some in the training school at Stareton near the Coventry, England tractor plant when I was there last at about that time. Like Marlowe says, they are a really good motor.

Cat bought Perkins because they did not have a clue as how to build a reliable small displacement diesel.

I'd take a SISU any day.
