I have a MF1135 & 1105 both have 354 - 6 perkins
the 1105 has a ton more hours on it but allways cranks even in winter without help. The 1135 is stronger and alot better condition but seems to allway require a little starting fluid. Ive had these for 10+ years, its allways
been this way but now i need to get the 1135 fixed properly so i can sell it. Does anyone have a sugguestion as what to check? Does diesels have something like gas motors with spark advance system?

All 1105's had a smaller turbo on them while the 1135's had a bigger turbo on them. The 1100's had no turbos while the 1130's had a turbo..... ALL 1105's and 1135's HAD TURBOS!!!! I've got both an 1130 and 1135 and they both start hard...have to use a squirt of ether on the 1135 below 50 degrees while the 1130 needs ether anytime you start it. I've just completely restored the 1130 and totally rebuilt the engine including the fuel system...rebuilt injection pump, new injectors, new lift pump, all new seals on the fuel lines so I know there is no air getting in system but it still starts hard. Have 2 other neighbors that have a 1130 and 1100 and they too start hard....just nature of the beasts!!!!

Ditto low compression, valve leaks and protrusion amount.

Something to concider on those when they start hard is the primary fuel pump, although when those are bad, they usually start hard warm too. If that pump isn't pushing the fuel through the filters, the injector pump has to pull it so to speak, and leads to hard starting.

There was a change in the injection pumps on the later 1105 & 1135 that allowed for advanced injection timing, because of this they retarded the timing for starting, when the engine speed came up the timing advanced. This pump allowed the engine to burn cleaner. You may have bad injection nozzles or the injection pump may be getting weak. I doubt that you have any engine mechanical problems. I have an old 1135 with a lot of hours, it smokes until it is warm, but it always starts down to at least 20 degrees F. ,no ether. The Cav injection system won"t tolerate any air in the fuel system, the combines could be really bad, because they had to pull the fuel so far. They can suck air from a number of places and usually won"t leak fuel, but rather will let air in system which makes them hard to start and also allows the fuel to drain back to the tank. When this happens ther engine has to crank until the fuel is back up to the injection pump. A sympton of air getting into the system is that the longer the tractor sits the harder it is to start, then usually once started they will crack right off when subsequently started. They usually leak on the suction side. Check the screws holding the lift pump together. There is also a screen under the cover of the lift pump. There is another screen on the fuel tank drain plug that fits around the fuel pickup tube. Check the rubber seals on the injection pump and filter lines.

Both 1105 & 1135 have turbos, the 1105 is much older, lower compression & smokes. The MF1135 is newer, stronger, dosent smoke and runs great after starting. It just want start easy like the old smoking worn out 1105. I was hoping maybe the timming was off or some kind of other adjustment.

All 1105's came from the factory with a turbo.Check your parts book or your service manuel. As for the starting problem it sounds like you may have low compression. It could be valves or rings. You could do a compression test to find out. It could also be the injectors or the injection pump. You would have to take them off to have them tested.

If the valves don't have the right amount of protrusion into the cylinder, then the compression ratio drops and results in hard starting. Injectors that need attention could be a culprit too.

Sureley this was the difference ,1105 non turbo and 1135 was turbo'd .I've never seen a 1105 with a factory turbo ? I had one that was but the motor came from a 760 combine.

ALL 1105's came with factory turbo. ALL 1135's came with factory turbo.

This is just a guess, but it could be because the 1135 has lower compression being a turbo vs the higher compression non turbo 1105.
