Thanks to David and Dean, I"ve survived the rear main seal and clutch replacement on my MF65 diesel.
I"ve had a bad oil pressure gauge since I"ve had the tractor and I changed it as part of this job.
I now see that I have the old disappearing oil pressure problem. Good when cold but down to 20lb when hot. The tractor doesn"t smoke or knock and pulls strong. I"d like to replace the main bearings and oil pump this winter. Can this be done by just dropping the pan or do you have to split the tractor and also remove the timing cover. The tractor is just show and mow now so I really can"t justify a complete lower end rebuild unless it"s absolutely necessary. As a note, my manuals still haven"t arrived. When I buy on online now(eBay included)I always ask if the item is in stock first and the shipping costs. There seem to be a lot of sellers that have nothing in stock and just take orders and others that advertise low prices then gouge you on the shipping. Unfortunately the hosts of this site don"t ship to Canada.

Hello Don,
It's a tough world. You can change the oil pump and all main bearings except the rear one when you drop the sump (oil pan). This is where your problem is likely to be. Appreciate that the tractor is only used for 'mow and show' but it is important to check the ovality of the journals as this may speed up the failure of new bearings. It will be money well spent if you are able to remove the crank, have it ground if necessary and replace it with new shells and oil pump. At least you'll know then that the 'bottom end' is good.
Cheers

Hi David,

I hope things are well in "the old country".

Oh well...I guess I'll bite the bullet on this one. The tractor is going to be stripped down for painting anyway. Playing with old tractors is still more fun than watching TV all winter and its cheaper than some other hobbies I've had. This one will probably cost me some new kitchen appliances as well.

Take care,

Don
