Champions cost more, but are they any better than Autolite?

Remember the old advertising slogan" It runs better with a fresh set of Champions"..... ..it was true because the Champions already in it were likely more than 6 months old..... ....

Back in the early 70's. my Dad had bad trouble with Champions' mis firing after about 6 months (points ignition)
I had exactly the same problem with several sets in the mid to late '80's in cars, light trucks, etc, all using stock GM HEI electronic ignition.

Since then, I gave up on them, so unless they are made differently now, I would not install them, even if they were free.

I have had better luck running Autolite than Champions. I have never had a bad Autolite off the shelf, but I have had several bad new Champion plugs, which led to difficulties finding the miss problem.

I prefer Champion (made in USA) always had very good luck. However, I do not have any thing bad to say about NKG or the others except that they do import parts for the plug or the entire plug.

I always had better luck with NGK's myself. The only gas engines I own now are a riding lawn mower w/ Kawasaki 18HP, a tiller w/B&S 12HP, chainsaw/weedeater/leaf blower, all 2-cycle, and the wifes car. All electronic ign. All have NGK plugs now. Modern electronic ignitions have done wonders for the life and performance of spark plugs. Not sure there is a "bad plug" out of Champion, Autolite, AC Delco and NGK for modern applications. I've lost touch with older gas engines and point type ignitions.

all depends in what you run them in? in masseys they are the best and it's the only plug to use in a Dodge. just what i have found after 35 years wrenching

Marlowe, you say in Masseys they are the best. Which one, Champion or Autolite, were you referring to?

In the owner's manual for my MH444, it says to use Champion 8 comm. or Autolite BT8 and to gap them at .020.

Autolite's replacement for BT8 is 386 and they say to gap them at .020.

The reference manual for Champion says that the replacement for 8 comm. is some model that I forgot. However, if you look up MH444 in that manual, they say to use a model that is the same except that it has a "U" in front of it. And for both of these models, they say to use a gap of .025.

Thanks, Marlowe. Which Champion do you use, and what gap do you use? Do you have a MH444?

My opinion, Champions just plain suck. I like to run AC Delco, Autolite, and NGK. I'll never run a Champion in my equipment as long as I have say in it.
