I recently bought a MF-135 Deluxe, gas. The dashlights were working but I had to fix the headlight wiring an now the dashlights don't work. The manual says that they are electro-luminescence. 1st- how does that work? 2nd- how do I fix them. I have voltage to the plugs for each instrument but they don't light up. Also where is the starter safety switch. They show it in the wiring diagram but I can't find it on the transmission. Does it look like the one's on an 8N? Someone has wired around it and I don't like that. Thanks for any info you can give me. Don

Hey thanks for the tips on the dash lights! Most of my electrical is a mess and in need of major repairs but I'm not real keen with electrical. Your insights are a big hel

I replaced the transformer on my 135 and decided to measure the voltage just to see what it should be. It measured 208 volts AC.

Dave is right.. those gauges are pretty special. there is a special transformer on the left hand side of the 'firewall' up above the battery compartment.

If it's active, you can actually hear it 'humm' and if you look from the right angle, you can see what looks like small electric 'arcs' at the bases of the gauges when they are active..

I believe that the gauges work like a mini-fluorescent lamp... the electron discharge excites the phosphor on the gauge face and it glows... (technical rambling)

As a starting place, I'd look to see that you've got voltage from your rotary light switch to your transformer.

I have voltage at the terminals that hook to the gages. It measures 12 volts without the tractor running and 16 volts with it running. Do you know what it should measure? If it acts like a transformer, I would expect it to be higher. Thanks.

I'll see if I can poke a voltmeter on my gauges tomorrow and find out what kind of voltage I've got on the terminals....

The gauges are kinda neat when they're lit arent'they ?... haven't seen anything else like them recently.

Yes they are really neat. I just can't figure out what I did to make them stop working. All I did was hook up a ground wire from the head lights back to a bolt on the dash frame to give a better ground. Thanks for your help.

Finally got out and pulled the side panel off to get a meter on them...

Hmm... 14 Volts ! But it was funny, got tangled up with the hot side of the meter and received a pretty good 'buzz'.. Didn't feel like 14 V!.. but I don't think the meter's lying either.

I can defintely hear that the gauges or the transformer is making a buzzing noise..

So the mystery deepens.. you've got voltage on the light terminal... and a ground for the meter ? But no light..

That's correct. I get 14 volts DC when I put the probe on the terminal to the gage and the other probe to ground. According to a followup posted by larryo, he says he measured 208 Volts AC. I'm not getting anything like that. I'm going to try to find a MF dealer in the area and go and talk to them to see what they have to say. This is getting the best of me. It's not that I need the lights but if they're there, I'd like to have them work plus maybe I can learn something. Thanks for your help. Don

Hmmm...I'll tell you... it FELT like 208V when I got 'stung'. 14V shouldn't give you a buzz unless your 'wet'... and I wasn't

I didn't think to try the meter on AC !

In short... I think larryo may be right ! If you listen to the gauges and transformer you can hear a faint 'buzzing' sound.... like 'AC'..

Did you try your meter in an AC position ?

The elctro-whatever gauges you have work by having been made with a specical paint that glows when an electerical current is applied to them. There is a transformer in the system somplace that is likely burnt out. It can be replaced. These gauges are nice, but terribly expensive to replace. Dave

I have the MF-2135 (same tractor in yellow) and my Continental 134 gas engine has the starter safety switch on the transmission housing, behind the skirting, ahead of the range selector lever (high/low gear selector). It looks like a pressure switch with about a 3/4" or 1" hex base. Mine sticks sometimes and needs to be replaced so I understand why some would wire it out (not smart but I can understand it).

My dash lights are by Maglight so I can't help you much but if you have power to the guages, I would start looking at proper ground. Take the guages out and clean the mounts so they get a good ground.
