Good afternoon every body, I am new to posting messages on this site, but, have read quite a bit of your posts when I was looking for the right tractor around my small farm. Anyways, the question is this, I ended up buying a 1974 Massey-Ferguson 135 gas with power steering. I brought it home and found that the power steering only works when your turning right. It had sat for awhile so I used the loader to raise the front end in the air and tried to bleed all air bubbles out by filling the steering pump with fluid and working the steering back and forth. It turns great up in the air obviously but when I set it back down, same problem. Are there any MF mechanics or fans that have had this problem before, and how did you solve it? Any info would be a great help! I could probably track down the problem, but figured you guys might be able to take some of the guess work out of it for me. Thanks a ton.

Thanks for the reply, is the steering box your referring to the one directly under the steering wheel? that the two hoses connect to? and what does the slider piece do, does it simply close off a port so that you can steer one way or the other, and if it breaks it just keeps one or the other ports closed? would that slider piece be available in a rebuild kit from Massey? Sorry to ask so many questions! I'm thankful for the input it has pointed me in a direction I probably wouldn't have thought of. THANKS!

Hi,
It seems like you have the steering system where the actuating valve is attached to the outer tube of the steering column, just below the steering wheel. Firstly the system works by having a controlled amount of play which activates the hydraulic circuit when the wheel is turned initially.
Turn the wheel back and forth and check for wear in the pins and barrel adjuster. Any play here is not acceptable as it will reduce the actuating movement.
In addition to this you will probably have wear in the top bearing of the steering column. This can normally be adjusted.
If you need to adjust here please come back and I'll tell you what to do.
To adjust the barrel. Remove it and find the central position for the steering wheel. Adjust the barrel length so that it can just be fitted and secure. Check that you have equal push and pull movement on the spool. This may not work if you have column bearing play.

Massey 135 has a fairly simple steering..

If you don't have a valve problem in the steering box, you may have a slider piece broken in the box..

Most times if it will turn to the right easily and hard to the left, if the slder piece is broken..

I have fixed 7 of these in the last two year..
