Hi,

My newly acquired MF 135 has just gone through the haying season. It performed very well at mowing and raking. The only problem I noticed was that when I mounted the rake to the 3pt hitch, initially it had trouble raising it up to transport position. When it finally did lift it there was a noticeable knock coming from the hydraulic lift pump.

The knock only seems to be noticeable when the inner quadrant lever is in the transport position. The Draft Control lever was in the fully raised position as suggested in the owner's manual.

Is there a maximum weight that the lift pump can handle on the 3pt hitch?

Does the knocking noise signify a potential problem with the hydraulic lift pump? What would account for the knocking noise?

Thanks,
Richard

we seem to have a similar problem on a massey 165. the problem in our case seems to be coming from the powertakeoff side. when we move the handle to engage the pto it seems to affect the hydraulics, it causes the lift to jump up and down rapidly and the pump stays pumping. also a loud cracking or knocking noise seems to come from the gearbox or thereabouts. i have checked the valves on the right hand side and the pump is not loose or vibrating. the tractor has a multipower system. any ideas????? ????? ????? ????? ?????

Hi

If your hyd system is "presssure control" type
and the inner lever is at constant pumping position the releif valve will open and close rapidly.

The pressure control hyd system controls operates diffently than the conventional. You may check in your operator manual.

Richard, The knocking sound is most likely that
your quandrant lever or draft lever are back too
far. Try inching them ahead and the cluncking probably will quit. Chuck

Hello,
The 'knock' is not uncommon and my oen 1965 MF 135 is no exception. However this knock can be caused by a broken dowel pin and possibly broken housing on the front of the pump.
On each side of the transmission casing you will see a diamond shaped plate held by two 5/16 studs and nuts. The pins were made heavier on later tractors. Breakage of one of these will allow the pump to move and rattle against the casing. Drain the oil to below the dowels and remove and check, one at a time.

Probably 90% of older Massey utilities have that knocking sound at transport position. My 150 has done it almost from day one. Been doing it for 36 years and no ill effects yet.

Yes there is a maximum weight that your three point can lift. I don't know what it is for a MF 135 though. Look in the operators manual or the spec sheet for the tractor.

With regard to ther pump knocking, make sure you have the right oil so that it's not foaming and make sure that the quadrant is adjusted properly to make sure that the pump isn't starving for oil. If you have an old type cam pump, the cams maybe worn.

Hi Jerry,

I actually have an original operator's manual for the MF 135 (UK version), but it doesn't mention anything abut the maximum weight for the 3pt hitch.

How would I make sure that the quadrant is adjusted properly?

Thanks,
Richard

Not being an owner of a MF135, I have no idea. You need to get a shop manual or do an archive search to see if anyone has published that mthodology.

Hello Richard,
If you have the Operator's Manual punlication No 819 163 M5 you will find the hydraulic spec on page 14 at 2850 lbs.
