I have been mowing a Pecan orchard here in SC full of thick Bahaya grass with a 5ft Bush hog and MF240. Been running at about 2400 to 2500 RPM (pegged out) in a low gear and it cuts through. Not really choking down but certainly has to work to cut the thick grass. Should I be concerned about running the tractor at such high RPMs for extended periods and working it so hard. We had an old 8N Ford that was gas not diesel and it was wide open and go. I know some of you experienced guys will have an opinion. By the way...kudos to this site. We went without a tractor for about 7 years and I bought this one last year. Since then have visited this site and forum frquently. This is a really informative discussion forum.

Dito to all the replies. A 40 hp tractor should run circles around a ford N . Sharp blades make a big difference, Run your tractor at the rated PTO speed. , anything more is not beneficial. Tall grass sometimes means a slower ground speed, not for the tractor but for the mower to catch up. My tractor has some low gears and in 4 ft high grass it works just fine. And I only have 15PTO hp with a 4 1/2ft cutter.

I'm assuming that your MF 240 is a diesel and is rated at around 40 HP @ the pto. You shouldn't have a problem with a 5 ft mower and 40 hp. Make sure that your air cleaner is not resticted. Stick with 540 pto rpm as the other writer suggests. Make sure your blades have a reasonable edge on them. If they're rock dinged, replace them.
I don't know anything about the grass you are cutting but with 40 PTO hp you should not have a problem with a 5 ft cutter nad shouldn't have to cut in low gear.

Will,Gerald is right. You should operate your bush hog at rated speed. You may have to gear down or not take a full swath.

How is your pecan crop doing.I live in the south of NM and the nust crop looks ok to me.

Your mower is probably designed to run at standard (540 rpm) PTO speed. The forces on the blade parts go up with the speed squared.

Probably you get standard PTO speed at 1800 to 1900 RPM. On the original tachometer there is a mark for PTO..
