I have a 444 that has a slipping hand clutch[live power]. I disassembled the the clutch and washed all the oil off the clutches. I can set it up so the clutch won't slip but then the clutch won't release when I pull the handle. When I set it up so the clutch releases then it slips when I'm pulling a load. Has anyone seen this problem before? I have an I&T manual but it isn't the best. Can't find a Massey Harris manual. Any ideas? Thanks Dale L

Dale, I had the same problem as you several years ago. I had to make some sheet metal shims 1/16 and 1/8 as the metal was wore from use over the years - added these and I was back in business. I also stopped by a Massey dealer and made copies of the assembly and adjustment instructions. I think I have a few leftover shims if you are interested.

I set the clutch up with the adjustment nut down by the clutch assembly.I wonder if anyone knows the correct thickness of the clutch disk?Maybe I'll take it apart again and take a second look. I plan on taking it apart this winter and get it ready to paint next spring when the weather warms up. I'd like to have every thing working right before I paint it.

All you are doing with that nut is adjusting the clutch release assy.,which has 4 balls in to move the clutch plates apart,so hopefully you just haven't hit the right spot yet.THAT was the very WEAK spot on those tractors when they raised the HP up.I have 3 Triples with live power but have never had to mess with them(one since new)(I took one apart and bolted it together on another pulling tractor but never used it.)Which maybe 80-90%of people did anyway.I have 5 other triples without Live power that we pull and use for hard work.If you want or need Part Nos.,just whistle.

Let me know if your brother can remember what the trick was to line up the clutch parts. Dale

I may not be any help,,But how are you adjusting that clutch to not release, because they are pretty well non adjustable if all the springs and spacer blocks are in them.the only adj.is on the lever. If everything is in there, then you may have broken or weak springs or your clutch disc need relined. Post back and maybe with a little more info, someone can pin point your problem.Good Luck.
