I have an engine oil leak into the clutch chamber on my MF65. Hopefully it's the rear pan gasket, but it may be the rear main seal. The engine is a Perkins A4-203. Can this two piece rope style seal be changed without splitting the tractor?

Hello,
Unfortunately no. It is necessary to split the tractor, remove clutch and flywheel and backplate.
When the seal housing has been removed all of the old gasket will need to be scraped off. If you need any more help please come back.

Thank you David. I just wanted to make sure the proper equipment was available. I'll do a clutch rebuild and transmission seal change while it's split. I'm also doing the brakes and axel seals. The tractor is on light duty now so it should last longer than yours truly. Have you ever heard of anyone being buried with their tractor?

Hello Don,
Being buried with your tractor would not work....you can't keep a good Massey Ferguson down!!!!
Are you sure that your leak is not coming from the rear sump gasket? The 152 and 203 engines are prone to this. If you can get hold of an inexpensive sump set, it might be worth trying this first and perhaps saving yourself a lot of work.
Cheers

Hi David,

I finally got back to the tractor yesterday and spent today picking up parts

I pulled the sump and replaced all the gaskets but still had a major oil leak. I then split the tractor and immediately saw that the housing was full of oil and the clutch was saturated.
I am in the process of replacing the clutch, bearings and seals. I have purchased a complete new clutch assembly with bearings, rear main rope seal, transmission input shaft seals, housing gasket and bearing.
I am at the point of pulling the crankshaft flywheel hub to access the rope seal housing.
Do you have any suggestions on removing and replacing the hub.
Also, the new clutch assembly requires a flywheel step of 1.71". Where would I measure the step and how would I change the step if necessary.
Thanks for any help

Sorry for all the questions but my manuals and CD have not arrived yet.

Don

David,

We're pulling the pan today to start. We'll only split if we determine it's the rear main and not the pan gasket. The lower gasket set was $37 CAN. If I go the whole route I'm looking at about $300 CAN in parts.

Thanks for your help

Don
