Perkins AD3.152 power steering. Is it necessary to remove the unit from the motor block to service the filter and what is the best way to purge the system to change fluid? As posted previous, I have ATF in it and want to change to Perma trans/hyd. Help is appreciated...scottyb

Thank you for your time to explain. Sometimes this forum is "Tractor repair for dummies" like myself and your help and patience is appreciated.

Hello,
It depends on which type of pump you have fitted. I believe that you have a different type in the States.IF you have the same as most European 135/to 550's the cover is roughly 'kidney' shaped. The cover can be removed with the pump in place but the cover screws are very small and I would certainly advise removal of the complete pump. If the cover is not fitted square it will be very easy to cross-thread the screws.
As to draining the system; look for the return pipe from the control valve. This is the one inside the starter solenoid with the rubber connector and clips. Either disconnect at the connector or at the pump and using a suitable container allow the engine to run at idle for several minutes until all of the oil is pumped out.
Place a jack under the front of the tractor so that the steering wheel can be turned easily. Mark and disconnect each pipe at the engine conversion plate and using a suitable container catch the oil that escapes when you turn the wheel from side to side. It is not possible to remove all of the oil in the system but you will come very close to it.
If you wish to be even more sure repeat the above after a couple of hours use.
